Thirty minutes later, Lockford sat with Gemma at a window table in the tearoom.

“May I join you?” Daphne stood beside their table.

Lockford got to his feet.

“I saw you both in the window and thought I’d join your tea party.” Daphne sat down at the table.

“Aren’t you warm in long sleeves? It’s an absolutely glorious today. It feels like spring.” Gemma had taken off her coat and wore short sleeves.

“I expected it to be cooler. I see you’re dressed for spring. You know it’s late September.”

“Where is Lady Harriet?” Daphne scanned the area.

“She couldn’t stay. Something about delivering a book to her father.” Gemma poured Daphne a cup of tea.

“At Grosvenor Square, correct?”

Ashe glanced out the window and noticed Jasper standing in wait. He caught the man’s eye. Jasper nodded to him.

“Excuse me, ladies. I’ll be but a minute or two.” Without waiting for a response, he got up.

“We can go with you. We’re finished here.” Gemma and Daphne left with him.

“Jasper?”

“Your lordship, I have a message for Lady Harriet. Dr. Manning said she was with you.”

“She was until thirty minutes ago. Lady Harriet returned home with material for the doctor.”

“I don’t think that’s where she went.” Ashe, Gemma, and Jasper turned to Daphne. “I saw her leave the library and head away from Grosvenor Square.”

“How do you know that?” Ashe had an uncomfortable feeling.

“I had been at Smithfield Market and noticed her from afar.”

Ashe shook his head. When would the woman realize that she can’t just waltz away whenever she wants. He’d speak to her this evening.
