Thirty minutes later, Lockford sat with Gemma at a window table in the tearoom.
âMay I join you?â Daphne stood beside their table.
Lockford got to his feet.
âI saw you both in the window and thought Iâd join your tea party.â Daphne sat down at the table.
âArenât you warm in long sleeves? Itâs an absolutely glorious today. It feels like spring.â Gemma had taken off her coat and wore short sleeves.
âI expected it to be cooler. I see youâre dressed for spring. You know itâs late September.â
âWhere is Lady Harriet?â Daphne scanned the area.
âShe couldnât stay. Something about delivering a book to her father.â Gemma poured Daphne a cup of tea.
âAt Grosvenor Square, correct?â
Ashe glanced out the window and noticed Jasper standing in wait. He caught the manâs eye. Jasper nodded to him.
âExcuse me, ladies. Iâll be but a minute or two.â Without waiting for a response, he got up.
âWe can go with you. Weâre finished here.â Gemma and Daphne left with him.
âJasper?â
âYour lordship, I have a message for Lady Harriet. Dr. Manning said she was with you.â
âShe was until thirty minutes ago. Lady Harriet returned home with material for the doctor.â
âI donât think thatâs where she went.â Ashe, Gemma, and Jasper turned to Daphne. âI saw her leave the library and head away from Grosvenor Square.â
âHow do you know that?â Ashe had an uncomfortable feeling.
âI had been at Smithfield Market and noticed her from afar.â
Ashe shook his head. When would the woman realize that she canât just waltz away whenever she wants. Heâd speak to her this evening.
